Passengers get free rail tickets for seven years

Posted in Crime, How much???, Lawyers, News, Weird World by Jim McMillan on August 16, 2008

If you discovered a glitch in the system which let you get free train tickets on your debit card, would you own up to it? Three commuters have been arrested and charged with knowingly exploiting the problem to buy $800,000 worth of Long Island Rail Road tickets and MetroCards, many of which they resold, according to the police and prosecutors.

Not everyone who benefited from the software glitch, did so knowingly. Since 2001, hundreds of rail riders have been rewarded from a computer gremlin which allowed vending machines on the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad to dispense free tickets on some debit card transactions.

The problem was first spotted in May, reveals the New York Times, and led to the uncovering of a series of suspicious transactions tied to a pair of debit cards issued by First Republic Bank. New Yorker Lisa Foster Jordan, 38, was arrested on May 28 and charged with fraudulently obtaining thousands of tickets and MetroCards worth about $800,000.

Last week, the police arrested two more people in connection with the scheme, Foster Jordan’s husband, Cary Grant (yes really!) and Chris Clemente from Manhattan. Lawyers representing the trio say they will be pleading not guilty.

Real Mad Men are sad men

Posted in Advertising, Business, Fashion, News, TV by Jim McMillan on August 11, 2008

The super-cool and sharp-suited executives portrayed in the critically-acclaimed television drama Mad Men are nothing like their twenty first century counterparts, you won’t be surprised to learn. In the AMC drama, the male chauvinists of Madison Avenue work hard and play hard and enjoy three-martini mid-morning lunches while they’re at it.

These days though, most of the execs have left Madison and the ones still there have yoga mats rolled up under their desks. And forget about those smart grey flannel suits. As the boss of Drogba5 tells the New York Times, “Agency people dress like well-paid teenagers.”

And at Madison Avenue’s Young & Rubicam, digital art director Andrew Stevens, adds: “I only wear a tie because I don’t have to.”

BATMAN CAN WEAR LADIES’ CLOTHES SO WHY NOT US?

Posted in Batman, Fashion, movies, Top Dollar News, Twits by Jim McMillan on August 7, 2008

You may have to be a macho masked vigilante to get away with wearing pantyhose. But men all over the world are giving it a try anyway. Since the release of The Dark Knight, there has been a sudden craze for male hosiery, with suspected Batman fetishists buying up sheer, satin and glossy tights.

“We aren’t sure if it is the Batman effect or what, but sales to men have been going through the roof,” Kieran Hughes, director of Precious Collections tells the Atlanta Constitution Journal. Has the world gone mad? Not according to Deborah Ashley, managing director of Luxelegwear.com, who says: “Men have begun to dominate the hosiery market once owned by women.” The company carries 13 styles designed specifically for men.

BAT’S AMAZING! MAN IN TIGHTS EYES UNSINKABLE RECORD

Posted in Batman, How much???, movies, Top Dollar Heroes, Top Dollar Movie Heroes, Top Dollar News by Jim McMillan on August 3, 2008

Previously unheralded oddball website Gotham News has been enjoying a feast of hits recently, thanks to its fictional defender, Batman. And the hits won’t stop coming in to the curioblog just so long as the Caped Crusader continues to scale dizzy heights at the box office. Perhaps in part due to the tragic death of Heath Ledger, Warner Bros movie “The Dark Knight” appears to be closing in on the all time US box office record of $600.8 million set by Titanic. The movie, which stars anti-mummy’s boy Christian Bale, has soared to a $394.9 million haul in just 17 days, according to Sunday’s studio estimates and Warner’s head of distribution Dan Fellman predicts it will sail past the $400 million mark by tomorrow night.

Despite Bale’s alleged shenanigans, since bagging an opening weekend haul of $158.4 million, Dark Knight has gone from strength to strength. According to Fellman, it will top $500 million, if not overtake Titanic’s record, which – like the boat – was thought to be pretty unsinkable.

New York Post movie critic Kyle Smith agrees with Fellman, though he thinks Titanic’s record willl stay afloat for now. “I think it can [break the record] though it’s highly unlikely it will approach the $600 million “Titanic” took in,” says Smith on his imaginatively-titled blog Kyle Smith Online.

IS IT AN ELEPHANT, IS IT A PLANE? SUPERJUMBO HITS JFK

Posted in How much???, Science, Top Dollar News by Jim McMillan on August 3, 2008

IS it an elephant, is it a plane? It’s a plane, of course – but not just any plane. It’s the world’s biggest commercial jet, which landed save and well at Kennedy airport at the weekend. Though it’s as wide as a football field, the double-decker Emirates A380 made a smooth landing at Kennedy Airport Friday following a 14 hour maiden journey from Dubai. The $320 million “superjumbo jet” – which can carry nearly 500 passengers – measures 79 feet, 7 inches high and has a wingspan of 261 feet, 8 inches. It even boasts bathrooms with showers, private first-class suites and an onboard lounge with a bartender.

Passengers, lucky enough to be able to afford to fly on the super jumbo, gave it a big thumbs up. “When we got off the flight, I didn’t feel like we had been on a 13-1/2-hour flight,” raved Freeda Moraes, who flew with her husband, Harry. “We were quite fresh, not tired. It was quite a wonderful experience.”

Meanwhile, it isn’t only the passengers who had to fork out a lot of money for the privilege. New York’s Port Authority invested about $179 million to upgrade the taxiway and bridges just to accommodate the flying beast.
